Welcome to a World of My Art

Hello, I am C.K. Higgison and this is my website for my paintings, prints, clothing and pillows.  I have had the domain name, Cottage by the C for many years now. Its origins stem from the fact that for over 15 years nearly all my paintings had small houses or cottages in them, and  C is the first letter of my first name.

New this year, 2020 I have set up an online store of selected clothing  with designs of paintings. It currently is live for a selection of leggings, shorts, skirts and dresses. In addition, a selection of pillows, scarves and prints of  certain paintings ( printed on stretched canvas) are available direct from my studio. Check out prints on my gallery page. Scarves, pillows and new headband/ face masks are available directly from me. Email me for photos.

If you are interested in seeing my work in its original form I have a tiny summer studio in our driveway. This year, since all our outdoor art shows are canceled, I will be hosting Mini-Pop Up Shops in our driveway with my husband Peyton, through out the summer. Follow me on Instagram to see when then 'pop up".  But if you are interested to visit my studio in person before that please contact me directly. Contact me. And in addition, we have a roadside flower stand, featuring flowers and aromatics from our gardens at $5 a bouquet. Bouquets by the Road,

During the summer of 2019 my work took a huge departure. I decided I needed a break from the realities of the world and I wanted my paintings to reflect things that bring me joy, or to paraphrase Marie Kondo, I wanted to create paintings that "sparked a joy" in me.  With that in mind I entered my tiny studio last July and have had a blast painting worlds of fantasy flowers, chickens, birds, other critters and tiny houses tucked back in the paintings. My number one supporter, besides my lovely husband Peyton, is our grand-daughter Éva (Seen below with a painting). She loves to come to my tiny house studio, and paw through the paintings and tell me she 'lobes" them and usually she asks if she can have one for her room. She is my audience and I hope that by painting pictures that bring her pleasure, the works will touch others and help brighten their days too.

My Story

I have been working with paint and making paintings of one form or another for the past 45 years. While originally from away, Connecticut in fact, I have been living, working and painting in Maine for over 40 years. I attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and graduated from Bowdoin College with an A. B. in Creative Visual Arts. I have had various day jobs, from working in an art gallery, to being a visual merchandiser, and running a museum gift shop, but I have finally, in the past 20 years found my calling as an elementary school art teacher.

In teaching art to young children I have found my true balance between making my own art and empowering young children to see, create and find their own visual voice as well.

In 1997 I founded and directed the Bowdoin Summer Art Camp. While I am not longer involved with the BSAC, it is still running strong, and I am very proud of having started it. I went on to become certified as a public school art teacher, with a focus and passion for working with young elementary children. I have taught art at the Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb, at Morse Street School (K -2), in Freeport, at Pownal Elementary, and since Fall of 2015 I became the art teacher at the Yarmouth Elementary School, a public 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade school in Yarmouth, Maine.

I have been married to my artist husband Peyton Higgison, for the past 35 years and we have made our home here in Brunswick, Maine where we raised our two grown sons Hunter and Skyler. Hunter and his wife Joanna have made Alexandria, Virginia their home and Skyler lives nearby with his partner Amanda and their young family.

For those curious about the signing of my art work as C. K. Higgison, I am of Armenian descent, and my full name is Chaké (sounds like Shacki)  Kavookjian Higgison. While I am proud of my Armenian heritage, it's an intimidating name to try fit on my small paintings and even harder to pronounce when seen for the first time, thus I use C.K. for my artist's signature abbreviation.
